Moisturizer: The inside scoop!

Moisturizer: The inside scoop!

Moisturizer seems pretty straightforward: put a little on and say goodbye to your dry, cracked skin. However, if you’ve ever struggled finding a moisturizer that actually banishes your dry skin, you know it isn’t that straightforward at all!

The reason it can be difficult to find a moisturizer that works for you is because there are three different types of moisturizers, all of which attack the problem in a completely different way.

HUMECTANTS – MOISTURE DRAWERS

Humectant moisturizers draw water from the depths of the dermis (the layer of tissue deep under your skin) and pull it up to the epidermis (your top layer of skin) where dehydration occurs.

This process slows down water evaporation and keeps moisture on the layer of skin that needs it most.

Searching for a humectant moisturizer? Look for these ingredients: Hyaluronic acid, glycerin, honey, and aloe vera.

Scrub Me Good Product Recommendation: We will soon be announcing a new body lotion to our line of products that is a great humectant moisturizer. Keep your eyes peeled!

EMOLLIENTS – SPACE FILLERS

Emollient moisturizers fill in cracks in dry skin with lipids and oils. It results in soft, silky feeling skin!

This process smooths out the skin’s surface and repairs its natural barrier.

Searching for an emollient moisturizer? Look for these ingredients: Silicone (dimethicone, Cyclomethicone), lanolin, shea butter, squalane, grape seed oils, ceramides, and rosehip seed oil.

Scrub Me Good Product Recommendation: Our body oils and body butters are great emollients! Both come in a variety of scents.

OCCLUSIVES – MOISTURE SEALERS

Occlusive moisturizers prevent the water in your skin from evaporating.

This process creates a seal on the skin that holds the hydration in.

Searching for an occlusive moisturizer? Look for these ingredients: Mineral oil, lanolin, beeswax, olive oil, and shea butter.

Scrub Me Good Product Recommendation: Our body butters and lip balms are great emollients that lock in moisture!!

MOISTURIZER PRO-TIP:

Whichever type of moisturizer you choose, apply it when your skin is damp for an extra boost of hydration!
