More Than Just a Wax: Meet Maddy of Flower Power Wax

At Scrub Me Good, we believe the best partnerships are built on shared values, real connection, and mutual respect for clients and their skin. That’s why we’re proud to feature Maddy Simon of Flower Power Wax, a solo waxing specialist who leads with authenticity, care, and community.

Maddy joined us at the Oregon Esthetics Show as a brand ambassador, and her approach to waxing, aftercare, and client connection perfectly reflects what we value. We asked her to tell us about her journey, her studio, and how she helps clients feel confident in their skin.

Meet Maddy Simon of Flower Power Wax

Tell us a little about yourself and how you got started in the beauty industry.

Hey! My name is Madison, but most people call me Maddy or MJ. I’m from MN, born and raised, but the last few years I have really prided myself on getting out of MN, seeing new things and gaining new experiences. I think it’s really important to not stay stagnant. When I am not traveling, you can always find me with my dog, Koa; my best friend and the light of my life. As a kid, if you had told me that I would grow up to be a body waxing specialist… I have no idea what I would have done, but I know my reaction would’ve been along the lines of “what the…?” All I knew is that I wanted to make an impact and to be somebody I am proud of.

When I was a teenager, I dealt with POTS and at the time, it was not a known thing, which made it a lot harder to navigate. I spent a lot of time at home during this time and found myself spending a lot of that time doing my makeup for hours, playing dress up, anything to make myself feel better than how I physically felt. That is what sparked the flame to go to beauty school someday because I wanted to make others feel better too.

What inspired you to open Flower Power Wax and go solo?

Flower Power Wax found me. I was at a point in my career where I was falling out of love with what I was doing and blaming myself for not fitting into the standard mold. I remember toying with the idea of going solo and thinking of what I would name myself; it was between Revolution Wax and Flower Power Wax. A week or two later, I was driving to a tattoo appointment when I noticed the license plate in front of me had the abbreviated version of Flower Power on it. When I got to my tattoo appointment, I had the wrong day but I wholeheartedly believe that was meant to happen and I was supposed to see that license plate.

I think the beauty industry can be really hard to find your place in. We are conditioned to put everyone else’s needs before ours, to fade into the background, to show up and leave everything at the door and if the conversation steers towards you that you need to direct it back to the client. Humans need connection and how do you expect to connect with anybody with those types of practices? I created a space for people to come into and feel like they are hanging out with a friend, talk about life, the good, the bad, the ugly and where I can genuinely answer the question of “what’s new with you?”

What’s your favorite part about helping clients feel confident in their own skin?

There is so much negativity in the world, it’s a dark time. There is no denying that. When a person walks into my space, the second that door shuts, we are in a better place and nothing outside of that door matters. I have always said “it’s more than just a wax”, it’s girlhood. Yes, I love helping people feel better in their own skin, but it’s truly about the moments of finding out a client is having a baby, hearing about a new relationship, the breakups, the hookups, the laughs, the engagements, the tears and everything in between. I am forever my clients biggest fan.

You’ve been retailing Scrub Me Good for a while now. What made you decide to bring our products into your studio?

Women empowerment is the root of my business and I take what I sell very seriously. I have never sold a product I do not wholeheartedly believe in. Scrub Me Good is a brand that cares about women’s health, wellbeing and skin. It is a woman founded business with ingredients that don’t leave you googling what something means. I could not be more happy to work with a company that cares about my clients as much as I do.

Which Scrub Me Good product do your clients love the most?

My clients love the brand as a whole and the amazing foundation it was built on. When it comes to products, my clients reach for the Bikini Care Oil and the Bikini Care Scrub the most. Those products are truly your silver bullets. Women love the multipurpose use of those two products, the low stress factor of “is this going to break me out?” and the clean natural scent.

What are your best tips for preventing ingrown hairs between appointments?

I believe that 90% of waxing/sugaring is how you take care of your skin at home and making sure you are staying hydrated. If you are not exfoliating (2–3x a week), you are not creating a smooth canvas for your hair to grow into. If you are not moisturizing after exfoliating (moisturize everyday), you are not creating balanced skin. I always start my clients out with exfoliation and moisture, and tweak it if needed as we progress. If we need to tweak something, it usually is adding in a chemical exfoliation. My favorite tip for taking care of your skin is after getting out of the shower, take your blow dryer, make sure it’s on the cool setting and blow dry your vulva. Getting rid of that excess moisture helps keep everything balanced and creates a perfect environment for your moisturizer.

You’ve won St. Cloud Community Votes two years in a row. What do you think makes your experience stand out?

I don’t take being proud of myself lightly and those awards are a reminder that I am making an impact. It is a privilege to make an impact, to have an opinion that matters and to be loved. I love the waxing community in central MN, we are all so diverse and unique. As basic as it sounds, my client experience is about us being ourselves. I am always myself, I will always compliment your vulva and you will always leave soft.

What’s something most people don’t realize about professional waxing?

That there are more benefits than no razor burn. So many people don’t realize how much softer and thinner your hair grows back as you continue to wax.

How do you help first-time clients feel comfortable?

I always try to set the tone prior to the service. I reach out to you a few days prior to answer any questions or concerns you may have, during the service I have extra time scheduled so we can take our time and talk through things, I also allow space for you to focus on your breathing, to look around at all the art, whatever helps ground you; your comfort is my first priority however that looks.

What was your favorite part of the Oregon Esthetics Show?

For most of my career, I have worked with hairstylists, so it was really cool to be in a space with other waxers and sugarists where we all spoke the same language. Truly though, getting to know Mary better was so fun; sitting in the hotel restaurant for hours both days talking about life, laughing, sharing secrets, it was that girlhood experience that I was talking about earlier.

At the heart of Flower Power Wax is something that can’t be taught or templated. It’s connection. Maddy has built a space where clients feel seen, supported, and genuinely cared for, not just during an appointment, but in the moments that make up real life. That same sense of community is what brings us together as estheticians, small business owners, and women supporting women. We’re grateful to share space, stories, and shows like Oregon Esthetics with people like Maddy, because this industry is better when it’s built on trust, conversation, and showing up for one another.
