What’s Better: Body Oil, Lotion, or Butter? (Spoiler: It Depends)

One of our recent customers asked a great question: She was trying to decide between our lotion, body oil, and whipped body butter, and wanted to make sure she picked the right product for her skin type and climate:

“I want something that moisturizes my skin, but doesn’t feel heavy or leave buildup. Should I go with lotion, butter, or oil?”

It’s a question we get often—so if you've ever wondered the same thing, this post is for you. We'll break down the difference between hydration and moisture, explain what each product is designed to do, and help you build a routine that works for your skin.

Choosing the right product for your skin can be overwhelming, especially with terms like "hydration" and "moisture" often used interchangeably. Understanding the distinct roles of different moisturizers can help you make informed decisions tailored to your skin's needs.

Understanding Moisturizers: Humectants, Emollients, and Occlusives

Moisturizers typically comprise three primary types of ingredients, each serving a unique function:

  1. Humectants: These substances, such as glycerin and hyaluronic acid, attract water from the environment or deeper skin layers to the outer skin layer, enhancing hydration.

  2. Emollients: Ingredients like shea butter and ceramides that fill in the gaps between skin cells, smoothing and softening the skin.

  3. Occlusives: Agents like petrolatum and beeswax that form a protective barrier on the skin's surface, preventing water loss.

Most effective moisturizers combine these components to hydrate, smooth, and protect the skin.

Luxe Body Lotion: Hydration and Light Moisture

Our Luxe Body Lotion is formulated with water-based humectants to provide hydration, complemented by emollients and occlusives for light moisture retention.

  • Contains: Water, glycerin, lightweight oils

  • Function: Hydrates and provides light moisture

  • Best for: Daily use, warmer climates, and layering under other products

Note: This is the only product in our line that provides true hydration due to its water content.

Whipped Body Butter: Deep Moisture Without Hydration

Our Whipped Body Butter is a rich blend of natural butters and oils, offering intense moisture without hydration.

  • Contains: Shea butter, mango butter, cocoa butter, jojoba oil, argan oil

  • Function: Provides deep moisture and creates a protective barrier

  • Best for: Dry or mature skin, nighttime routines, and colder climates

Note: This product does not hydrate as it contains no water; it moisturizes by sealing in existing skin hydration.

Body Oil: Lightweight Moisture Sealant

Our Body Oil offers a lightweight option to lock in moisture, ideal for quick absorption and a non-greasy feel.

  • Contains: A blend of natural oils

  • Function: Seals in moisture and provides a subtle glow

  • Best for: Post-shower application, warmer climates, and those preferring a lighter feel

Note: Like the Whipped Body Butter, this product does not hydrate but helps retain existing skin moisture.

Layering for Optimal Skin Care

For enhanced skin benefits, consider layering products:

  1. Start with Luxe Body Lotion: Hydrates the skin.

  2. Apply Body Oil: Seals in the hydration provided by the lotion.

  3. Use Whipped Body Butter: For areas needing extra moisture or during nighttime routines.

This approach ensures your skin receives hydration and retains moisture effectively.
