Q&A with Charlotte Carr
What inspired you to become a waxing pro, and how did you get started in the industry?
I was 37 weeks pregnant and couldn’t even see her….. anymore… so I decided to get my first wax.
Oh boy, what a mess that was! My first couple of Brazilians were actually pretty intense—they included lifting, unnecessary breakage, and even the accidental removal of a mole (she never grew back unfortunately 😭). Naturally, I thought to myself, I can definitely do this better! And I have done exactly that! I strive everyday to do and be the best I can be!
How do you create a standout client experience at your studio in Burnsville, MN?
What makes me stand out most in the beauty community is my dedication to continual learning, honesty, and educating my guests while building real connections.
For my wax clients specifically, I offer a killer first-time deal ($45 Brazilian) and include free aftercare samples.
I retail multiple sizes of my favorite exfoliants and moisturizers, but I also stay up-to-date on drugstore alternatives so I can help clients at every budget.
In the treatment room, I provide stress toys, encourage deep breaths, and distract with stories during the service. At the end, I always congratulate my clients, then follow up a few days later to make sure their results are smooth and they’re happy.
What are your favorite pre-wax and post-wax skincare tips—and how do you talk to clients about the benefits of exfoliating?
My #1 recommendation is to exfoliate and moisturize 2/3x per week, no matter what method of hair removal you use. Ingrowns and bumps can happen with everything, from Nair to laser, but consistent skin care between treatments is what keeps results beautiful.
I like to explain it as an 80/20 rule: I only do 15 minutes of work, but you’re responsible for the rest at home. Other good tips include: stay hydrated, avoid caffeine or stimulants before your appointment, and don’t trim—no hair is ever too long for me. Exfoliating the day before helps free trapped hairs and makes removal easier.
Aftercare is something I stress constantly in my studio (and yes, I can tell when you’ve been slacking—your dead skin shows up in the wax 😅). But I’m not judging! I slack sometimes too! We just have to do the best that we can!
My favorite go-to product is the Bikini Care Oil from Scrub Me Good. It soothes, nourishes, and helps fight bacteria when paired with consistent aftercare.
My basic rules for after a wax are: 24–48 hours of calm and dry downtime (commando if possible), moisturize daily, exfoliate starting 3 days post-wax, and if sensitivity pops up, use a cold compress or ibuprofen.
How has retailing Scrub Me Good products helped grow your waxing business?
Retailing Scrub Me Good scrubs and oils has grown my business tremendously. I can always provide clients with proper aftercare right from their first visit, whether through samples or full-size products. Having the right retail on hand makes my services more effective, builds trust, and keeps clients loyal.
What made you decide to bring in Scrub Me Good’s products, and how have your clients responded?
Honestly, the first reason was that they’re a Minnesota-based brand! I was searching for products I could trust on my own sensitive, compromised skin, since I live with chronic eczema and flare-ups from head to toe.
I started using Scrub Me Good’s scrubs, oils, lotions, and oatmeal bar soap for myself, and they helped me tremendously. After that, it was an easy decision to bring them in for my clients. Their response has been amazing—I’ve had to restock multiple times this year, and I’m actually working on expanding my retail area just to keep up with demand.
What role do retail products play in your overall business success?
Retail is essential. No matter the service, your clients trust your professional opinion. The convenience of being able to pick up recommended products right at their appointment is unbeatable, and it directly impacts client results and loyalty.
What advice would you give new estheticians looking to retail skincare in their studio?
Do it! I know it feels scary at first, you wonder if it will be worth it, but trust that you have to start somewhere. Retail builds over time, but only if you commit to it.
Put yourself out there every day, keep educating yourself, and strengthen every skill, customer service, attention to detail, and even your ability to “public speak” one-on-one with clients. With practice, it all clicks, and one day, you’ll feel like a true pro.
